Howdy, folks! Earlier this week, something happened that’s only come around in my writing career a precious few times: I got to see a brand-new exhibit I worked on being enjoyed by the public. Specifically, this was at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and the new exhibit is Soccer: More Than a Game.

This is, without a doubt, the most complex and in-depth exhibit I’ve ever worked on for the Perot. I started on it several months back. Normally, I write all the copy for something like this at once, but Soccer: More Than a Game was large enough that it had to be split into three parts, each corresponding to one of the sections I’ll outline below.

Before I get started on this, however, let me give a Texas-sized shout-out to the team at the Perot that I worked with to bring this exhibit from imagination to reality. Color me stunned at just how well the concept art and ideas translated to real life.

I also want to say that photos don’t do this exhibit justice. The interactivity, the wonderful bursts of color, and all the minute touches that go through this whole experience are all incredible. If you are in the DFW area, I would highly recommend giving the Perot Museum a visit for this and many other cool exhibits.

Impact of the Game

Once you have your special RFID wristband, you’ll first get your profile together in the locker room. The majority of characters you see listed here above the lockers are ones that I named and even came up with some lore for them. If you get a chance, each locker in this area has a lot of little touches, like a movie set. It’s wonderful.

Once you head down the multicolored tunnel, you’ll find yourself in the Impact of the Game section. From there, you design a stadium out of LEGO bricks, build a mascot or a jersey, and look at a world map that allows you to pick a country and see their soccer jerseys, just to name a few.

There are freestanding displays here and there that scroll various facts about soccer, the careers that are involved, and some of the reasons that soccer is the world’s most popular sport.

C.L.E.A.T.S

In the next section, you’ll find the Coaching Lab for Excellence in Athletics, Technology and Science, or C.L.E.A.T.S. Here, you’ll find several stations that cover quizzes for different soccer balls, past and present, as well as some questions about various types of the eponymous cleats.

There are virtual movement interactive exhibits, photo opportunities, and many more informational displays. One exhibit that I found particularly compelling was the Make the Call station, where you can take the role of a referee and use various camera angles and playback options of a soccer field to call penalties correctly.

The Academy

Beyond C.L.E.A.T.S, you’ll get to The Academy, and this area made my little writer’s heart glow like an ember. There were long lines to several of the bigger interactive exhibits. I left and came back a little while later, and the lines were even longer than before.

This section is where you get a number of interactive games, including a medical care/repair station, an oversized skee-ball court, a robokeeper, the floor is lava, and other activities that are all super fun. The kids are going to love it.

Bonus Round: Minerals of the World Cup

As a tie-in, I also helped to modify the previous topaz exhibit in the gem and mineral hall on the third floor. In this one, you’ll see some of the dazzling mineral diversity of a number of countries competing in the World Cup. This also includes the host countries of Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

On a side note, I am always surprised when I see the vibrance and intensity of the colors on display in these gem and mineral exhibits. It really is a testament to just how beautiful, varied, and sublime our planet is when we stop to look. Stopping to smell the roses is great and all, but stopping to admire the fluorite can be even better.

In closing, Soccer: More Than a Game and Minerals of the World Cup were super fun to work on and see come to life. Once again, my thanks to the Perot team for including me in the fun. Here’s to many more projects like this one in the future!

But seriously, folks, if you’re in the DFW area, definitely check this out. You’ll be glad you did.

Thanks for reading!

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.

In an age of video game remakes and remasters, some developers have taken varying steps to modernize older titles. Last year, Konami and developer Bloober Team took a stab at their first remake of “Silent Hill 2,” which was built from the ground up and gave it both graphical and mechanical overhauls to modernize the horror classic. Remakes like “The Last of Us Part 1” were almost identical to their original versions, which puzzled some fans as the PS4 remaster was perfectly playable according to modern standards.

As a beat-by-beat remake of 2004’s “Metal Gear Solid 3,” 2025’s “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” feels like a mix of both, though tilting towards the latter, but it has just enough tweaks and new additions to justify its existence. With drastically improved visuals and a modern control scheme, “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” is the definitive way to experience one of the greatest stealth games of all time.

The game takes place in 1964 during the middle of the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union. Our protagonist, Snake (David Hayter), has to infiltrate the Soviet Union in order to rescue a Russian rocket scientist named Sokolov. It does a fantastic job utilizing real-world events to create a riveting historical fiction setting.

There’s a natural sense of escalation when Snake must also stop the Soviet Union from deploying a deadly superweapon that could destroy the US. As a result, the story manages to pull you in and keep you invested. Early on, his mentor, The Boss (Lori Alan), also defects to the Soviet Union, which adds a personal touch to Snake’s journey and makes us empathize with him more. These character dynamics and motivations elevate an already intriguing historical drama into a masterful act of storytelling.

This game is also unafraid of taking the “fiction” part of historical fiction to its limits. Along with confronting The Boss, Snake also has to deal with superhuman freaks like the bio-electrically enhanced madman Volgin (Neil Ross) and The Pain (Gregg Berger), who has the ability to control hornets. They make for eccentric antagonists and exhilarating boss fights that you wouldn’t expect in a seemingly more grounded stealth game.

It’s a wild and imaginative juxtaposition that makes “Metal Gear” stand out amongst its other stealth game contemporaries. For anyone who’s played “Death Stranding” and its sequel, you can see where director Hideo Kojima’s knack for wacky names and abilities manifested when he created the “Metal Gear” series.

Speaking of characters, “Delta” reuses the original voice lines from the 2004 game, and it’s impressive how well the voice acting has held up even after two decades. Hayter’s gruff portrayal of Snake complements Alan’s motherly tenderness as The Boss. The quality of voice acting wouldn’t sound out of place today, and that’s a testament of the original’s legacy.

For a game that was created in 2004, the original had stealth gameplay mechanics that were ahead of its time and created the foundation that many modern games take inspiration from. While you have the standard stealth game elements like choking enemies out, there are also some light survival mechanics. Snake’s stamina impacts his walking pace, aiming stability, and damage resistance. He’ll need to catch and eat the animals in the jungle to restore it. These mechanics may not be revolutionary by today’s standards, but there’s a sense of nostalgia and familiarity that kept me going.

The game’s unique stealth mechanic, however, is the camo index. You’re able to swap out Snake’s camouflage patterns at any given time. The jungle terrain is filled with various foliage, rocks, and bodies of water, so it’s important to blend in. The camo index displays how well Snake fits into whatever environment he’s currently in and that drastically impacts whether enemies can see him. It adds a strategic element to the stealth gameplay that constantly keeps you engaged with every enemy encounter.

The two aspects of “Delta” that received the biggest makeovers from the original game are the graphics and the controls. All of the characters, including Snake, The Boss, and all other villains and allies look like they underwent plenty of work to make them on par with modern visuals. The new lighting also makes the game’s lush jungle environments more vibrant than before.

However, “Delta” doesn’t take full advantage of current consoles and PC’s power. This game is a literal 1:1 recreation of the original, and that means the gameplay area segments are too. For example, a fortress you visit called Grozynj Grad is split into four different areas. When you travel between them using the doors, you’ll have to go through a loading screen, just like in the original game. Given how much more powerful modern hardware is now compared to the PS2, these segments could have been seamlessly strung together into one large area. Instead, we’re stuck with what was a byproduct of hardware limitations on up-to-date technology and platforms.

Fortunately, “Delta” feels great to play due to a new control scheme aptly called “New Style” which mirrors the one in “Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.” This lets you run around in a third-person over-the-shoulder view like in modern games such as “Mafia: The Old Country” and “God of War Ragnarok,” as well as rotate the camera freely. The original’s top-down and fixed camera is also preserved in the “Legacy Style” control scheme option for those who want to relive the authentic PS2 experience.

For fans who’ve played the original, this new version will feel right at home. Chronologically, this entry is a prequel, so those who’ve never played a “Metal Gear” game won’t feel intimidated by the franchise’s extensive history and can start with this one. It’s unknown whether we’ll ever get a “Metal Gear Solid 6” given that Kojima has long since departed Konami and his quirky idiosyncrasies would be difficult to replicate, but in the meantime, “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” is subsistence enough.

The publisher provided a review copy of this title. It launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 29.

[The following is an excerpt from my ttrpg book, The Artificer’s Guide to Magic Items available here on DM’s Guild. In its first week it has already achieved Copper Bestseller status!]

Dearest Devs,

I know I have engaged in some light critique in this guide, but in all sincerity, I hold all of you in the highest respect. None of my comments or implications here are intended to be mean spirited or insulting. You have labored long to produce a game that millions of people across the world play and enjoy on a daily basis, myself included.

As you can see from this guide, I love the Artificer class. Thematically, it fills a gap that I’ve wanted to see addressed for many years. I must admit, however, that I’ve been disappointed in how the class has been supported since it first appeared in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. There have been a few new spells added to the Artificer’s spell list as new sourcebooks have come out, but none of them have been exclusive as far as I’ve seen. D&D Beyond has greatly expanded the list of items that can be replicated, but that’s about it.

Apart from that, it has received no additional infusions, no alternate class abilities, unique magic items, or new subclasses the way that the standard twelve classes have. It is a class that rarely appears in virtually any D&D merch, such as the gorgeous, officially licensed enamel pin set. A few of its class features, such as the 9th-level ability Armor Modifications, don’t work correctly on D&D Beyond, and it seems unlikely that the class will ever appear in Larian Studios’ recently released Baldur’s Gate III game, or indeed any other D&D-themed video game in the near future.

Perhaps it is too soon to tell, but it concerns me that there’s been very little about the class in the One D&D releases or interviews. When the Expert classes were released, the Artificer was listed in a footnote as being part of that type of class, but it was not explored the way that the Bard, Ranger, and Rogue were in the playtest materials. This leaves me wondering whether the Artificer class will have a place in the game moving forward.

I hope that it does.

So, Wizards of the Coast, I challenge you to give the class the consideration it’s due. Make it a legitimate part of the game instead of a strange, often-overlooked curiosity. It may be easy for me on the outside to say this, but when it comes to the Artificer, give us more and give us better. The potential for the class is there, so please do what you can to see it fully realized.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Si vales, valeo.
